When initiating any systematic review it is useful to consider carefully which approach and which type of data will be most appropriate at the outset. Particular thought should be given to factors that are likely to introduce bias to the review. There may be cases where the benefits of obtaining IPD turn out to be marginal; others where it could be vital.
